When I was designing the Chemix Intra workout formula, I wanted to really focus on what causes fatigue rather than just adding carbs and amino acids. Carbs are certainly important, as glucose(dextrose) is the main substrate for glycolysis- one of the body’s pathways for making ATP(energy). Choosing the right carb source was critical in order to maximize performance in the gym. Cluster Dextrin, or highly branched cyclic dextrin (HBCD) is a high molecular weight cyclic molecule of dextrose. It has a low osmotic pressure, meaning it can be easily absorbed in the stomach and used for quick energy.
N-coumaryoldopamine and N-caffeoyldopamine are 2 very interesting fat-burning compounds. They are both beta-2 agonists(like ephedrine and clenbuterol) and have been shown to dramatically increase production of cyclic AMP(cAMP). Their mechanism of action is very similar to clenbuterol, which many bodybuilders use during their precontest cycles. cAMP increases lypolysis, which is the break down of fat cells for energy. Usnic acid is part of a group of compounds known as uncouplers(DNP is anotheruncoupler). Uncouplers are mostly non-polar weak acids that are able to disrupt ATP synthesis. In a nutshell, one of the drivers to produce ATP in the electron transport chain is the energy generated from the H+ gradient(all of the H+ are on 1 side of the membrane which creates an electric potential). Usnic acid can bind with and transport H+ across the membrane, which effectively creates "leaks" in this gradient and it loses energy. Your body still needs ATP, so it draws energy from stored fat to makeup for the loss caused by usnic acid.
Catechins are a class on molecules that are common in teas, including black and green tea. They display many different health properties, including antioxidant, fat oxidation and carb digestion. However, today I wanted to talk about a new claim being made about epicatechin. In a 2014 study, researchers saw that subjects given 150mg of epicatechin saw a favorable change in the plasma levels of follistatin/myostatin ratio. It's been previously reported that an increase in follistatin may decrease expression of myostatin, but to what degree remains to be seen.
Ran across this study while researching some new compounds so I thought I'd share with you. Researchers gave young(age 23) strength training athletes 3g of GABA or placebo before lifting. The group receiving GABA had an increase in GH release post workout by 480%!! GABA is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for regulation of a lot of neural processes. The exact mechanism for stimulating GH release is unknown, but it is known that GABA cannot readily cross the BBB.
Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine(alpha-GPC) is an interesting molecule that has some interesting properties. It's a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which may improve cognitive function, and it can readily cross the blood-brain barrier(BBB). Many supplement companies are including it in preworkout formulas bc of 2 studies that came out last year. One study showed athletes taking 600mg 45min prior to working out noticed a 14% increase in power.
Came across this study the other day and I thought it was interesting. Almost every preworkout over the last 15 years have contained some form of Arginine. It was the original vasodilator and was in every "NO" product. We now have much better options for a pump. The researchers in the study found something that should confirm to supplement companies that Arginine shouldn't be used in preworkouts anymore
Hordenine isn't a new compound, but it's a lesser known PEA. It's formed from Tyrosine in the body and has some interesting properties. Many supplements include this in a preworkout, but not as a stimulant(it's missing the alpha methyl group necessary for binding). While it can have mild stim effects, it's main function is to act as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOi).
This molecule was a fan request and it's starting to show up in a lot of newer products. It's called amentoflavone and it has some really interesting properties. It's found in a number of botanical species such as ginkgo biloba and St. John's wort. With respect to bodybuilding, amentoflavone acts as a vasodilator. It's mechanism of action, however is very unique. It acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, specifically inhibiting the breakdown of cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP). cAMP is a messenger/signaling molecule used to help get hormones such as adrenaline across the plasma membrane.
